CWDM/DWDM

Description

CWDM is using optical multiplexer to different wavelengths of light to reuse the signals to single fiber transmission

Details

Dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) is an optical transmission method that combines multiple data streams onto a single cable by using different light wavelengths.

DWDM is a type of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) that can input 40, 88, 96, or even 160 channels onto a single strand of fiber optic cable, using the spectrum range between 1530nm and 1625nm, also known as the C-band and L-band.

Despite each channel in DWDM being roughly 0.8nm wide, its name refers to the use of denser wavelength spacing to fit more channels. In contrast, CWDM, DWDM's WDM counterpart, uses a wider spectrum of frequencies, with channels spaced farther apart. With a larger number of channels available, DWDM can transmit significantly more data on the cable than CWDM, which only has channels that are 20nm wide.
